Germany: Fires, Fountains & Festive Hunts

Germany turns into a fairytale during Easter, and FlixBus along with FlixTrain connect you effortlessly to some of its most enchanting spots.

Weimar hosts one of Germany’s classic Easter egg hunts, where the whole town joins in searching for colorful eggs in parks and gardens—a perfect spot for families or nostalgic adults. This tradition was introduced by Johann Wolfgang Goethe, a famous German poet in the 18th century.

Travel with FlixBus or FlixTrain: Witness this tradition by taking a FlixBus from Berlin with a direct connection in around 4h, from Dresden in 3:35h and from Würzburg in 3:20h. From Berlin in 2:13h, from Frankfurt Süd in 2:38h and from Stuttgart in 4:33h with a transfer at Erfurt main station by FlixTrain.

Hamburg lights up the skies with its Osterfeuer (Easter Bonfires). On the night before Easter Sunday, communities gather around large beachfront fires, symbolizing the end of winter.

Travel with FlixBus or FlixTrain: A direct FlixBus connection can take you there from Berlin in about 3h, from Szczecin in 7h and from Amsterdam in 6:20h. FlixTrain offers direct train connections from Berlin in 2h, from Leipzig in 3:29h and from Dusseldorf in 3:27h.

Luxembourg: Pretzels on Bretzelsonndeg

Head to Luxembourg for Bretzelsonndeg—a sweet little tradition where guys gift their crushes pretzels with sugar icing and almonds. If she accepts? He’s invited for Easter and gifted an egg. In leap years, the roles flip. It’s charming, tasty, and totally unique.

Travel with FlixBus: Get to Luxembourg easily with direct FlixBus connections from Trier in 45 mins, from Frankfurt in 3:15h, from Amsterdam in 6:10h and from Brussels in 2:40h.

You can be a part of Poland’s heartfelt Easter Sunday breakfasts. Desserts steal the show at Easter in Poland. Expect tables overflowing with homemade Babka (Sweet braided bread), Mazurek (Easter shortcake), Sernik (Cheesecake) and of course Pisanki (Painted eggs), all part of a long-standing family tradition.

Travel with FlixBus: To enjoy some of these sweet Polish treats, board a direct FlixBus connection to Warsaw in 7:40h or to Poznań in 3:35h from Berlin. You can also get to Kraków with FlixBus from Budapest in 6:15h or from Vienna in 6:20h.

Italy: Exploding Carts & Dove-Shaped Rockets

Florence takes things up a notch with its Scoppio del Carro (Explosion of the Cart). On Easter Sunday, a nine-meter tall, antique cart weighing four tonnes led by white oxen and filled with fireworks is pulled through the city, decorated with garlands of the first flowers and herbs of Spring that represent the city of Florence. The Archbishop of Venice lights a mechanical dove-shaped rocket from the main altar, which flies along a wire, collides with the cart and sets off a firework show.

Travel with FlixBus: To witness this spectacle, get to Florence with FlixBus from Milan in 4h, from Venice in 3:45h, from Verona in 2h. You can also take a direct FlixBus connection from Nice in 5:35h or hop on an overnight journey from Munich in 8h.

Sweden & Finland: Witches, Willow Twigs & Candy

In parts of Sweden and Finland, children dress up as Easter witches (påskkärringar in Swedish and trulli in Finnish) and go door to door with decorated willow twigs—kind of like Halloween, but in spring. In Finland, the witches even recite a traditional rhyme at the door: Virvon, varvon, tuoreeks terveeks, tulevaks vuodeks; vitsa sulle, palkka mulle! (In translation: I wave a twig for a fresh and healthy year ahead; a twig for you, a treat for me!)

Travel with FlixBus: Head toward the Western coast of Sweden to Gothenburg with FlixBus from Oslo in 3:30h, from Copenhagen in 5h or take a FlixBus to the Finnish Capital Helsinki from Tallinn in 2h and from Riga in 8:20h.

UK: Egg Rolling, Hot Cross Buns & Simnel cake

Find yourself in a timeless Easter celebration where families gather on hillsides with a vibrantly decorated hard-boiled egg. The objective is simple: to roll their egg down the hill, hoping it will travel the farthest without breaking. Afterward, enjoy some hot cross buns, simnel cake (Fruitcake) and tea—it doesn’t get more British than this.

Travel with FlixBus: You can enjoy the egg rolling at the famous Avenham Park in Preston. Get to Preston from Lancaster with FlixBus in 40 mins, from Manchester in 1h or from Leeds in 4:40h with a transfer at Manchester. Alternatively, you can relish the hot cross buns in any English city or town such as London, Birmingham, Cambridge or Bristol- getting there is easy with regular FlixBus connections.
