Small choices, big impact: Flix estimates up to 1.5 million tonnes of CO₂ avoided in 2025 thanks to its passengers

+++ CEO André Schwämmlein: «Doing better should not be hard we want to make this possible for anyone. Together with our partners, we will keep working to drive change at scale.»

+++ Sustainability through reach: Flix’s network spans small towns with no rail access in more than 40 countries — actively reducing car dependency where it matters most.

+++ Today, Flix has released its fourth voluntary sustainability report, depicting its ESG efforts across the year. Thus, it reaffirms its commitment to transparency and continuous improvement.

Munich, April 22nd, 2026 – In 2025, Flix passengers around the world avoided an estimated 1.5 million tonnes of CO₂ only by choosing coaches over driving or flying, based on modeled scenarios comparing alternative travel modes.[1] As car costs rise and airfares climb, travel by coach emerges not just as an affordable option, but also as an empowering one.

Providing anyone with affordable, practical solutions to make better choices is at the core of Flix’s vision and shapes its strategy, as it is visible in its fourth sustainability report published today.

Coach travel to and from 8,700 destinations worldwide contributed to relevant CO2 savings in 2025

More people on collective transport means fewer private cars on the road. 50 passengers in one coach can mean up to 50 fewer cars, having a material impact on the environment. Based on data[2], a person riding with FlixBus in Europe emits on average at least 5 times less CO2 per km than driving the same route. In practice, a FlixBus ride from Berlin to Rome is expected to cut CO2 emissions by 84% versus the private car, performing nearly as well as intercity rail. Compared to domestic flights on any selected route, the expected saving per person is even higher — up to 10 times less CO2 emitted per km.

This shows how affordable collective transport can be a viable solution for those seeking to reduce their impact, especially as travel by car and air faces growing uncertainty in the light of global events.

«Everyone should be able to make more sustainable choices. Together with our partners, we are committed to increasing our network even further to make affordable collective travel available to more people. Individual actions, multiplied, can drive massive change. Enabling that transformation is our responsibility,» said André Schwämmlein, CEO and Co-Founder of Flix.

Flix is also continuing fleet transformation by piloting lower-carbon alternatives to Diesel, like electric and biofuel. While infrastructure gaps and technological constraints remain concrete challenges in the coach industry, Flix and its stakeholders across the sector (e.g., manufacturers) are advancing united toward this goal. In 2025, around 120 coaches were powered by alternative drives and fuels.

Social sustainability through reach: coach travel safeguards mobility in sparsely populated areas

Especially where the rail infrastructure is lacking or overall missing, coaches can be a valuable resource to reduce residents’ dependency on the private car and thus their individual travel footprint.

Of more than 8,700 destinations connected by Flix in over 40 countries worldwide, 31% have less than 20,000 inhabitants and many of them are poorly or entirely unserved by rail.

In these areas, coaches do not just encourage shared over individual travel to the benefit of the environment, but also safeguard the mobility of residents without cars, students and young workers building a career in bigger cities far from home, as well as families staying connected across distances. This is concrete evidence that social and environmental value of collective transport are inseparable.

Fourth voluntary sustainability report released today: Flix’s commitment to transparency continues

The environmental and social value of collective travel are at the core of Flix’s strategy and vision. This is reflected in the company’s fourth voluntary sustainability report, released today (see here).

The report has been prepared in orientation with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) under the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). Although not yet subject to mandatory reporting under the CSRS, Flix has chosen to do so for the second consecutive year, thus reaffirming its commitment to transparency and self-assessment for continuous improvement.

Grounded in a double materiality assessment which investigates both the impact of Flix’s operations on society and the environment, and the financial implications of sustainability-related risks and opportunities for the company it includes over 200 indicators in the Environmental, Social, and Governance areas, spanning many sub-areas from energy and emissions to anti-corruption.

For the first time, Flix obtained independent third-party assurance of its Corporate Carbon Footprint for 2025 covering Scope 1, 2 and Scope 3 Category 11 emissions , reinforcing the company’s commitment to transparency and data reliability in sustainability reporting.
